From Alphonse Mucha's Princezna Hyacinta (Princess Hyacinth), 1911. From the poster for the fairy tale ballet and pantomime production Princezna Hyacinta by Ladislav Novák and Oskar Nedbal presented in Prague during the 1911 season. The subject of the play was a blacksmith who dreamed his daughter was a princess kidnapped by a sorcerer. Andula Sedláková starred in the title role and the portrait of the celebrated actress dominates the poster, her blue eyes steadily fixed upon the viewer.. Decorative elements include hearts, blacksmith tools, a star-spangled crown and instruments of sorcery, all references to the ballet. A hyacinth motif appears throughout, most evidently on the circlet held in the actress's hands, and also in her exquisite jewellery. There are even hyacinth florets dangling from from the princess's marvellous crown. Colours include teal blue, teal green, cinnabar red, golden ivory, antique white and a touch of olive green.
