Movie Theatre - The joy of movies 1918 Doormat

Colourized photo from 1918 Original Title: Crandall's Theatre Photographer: The National Photo Co Location: 9th and E streets NW, Washington DC This is the Joy Theatre, owned by Harry Crandall, and as such it was often known as Crandall's Theatre. It was opened in 1913, had 450 seats. The building used to sell haberdashery, but it was remodeled to have a slanted cement floor. Each night he would flood the floor with water and it would exit out the bottom, all to keep it sanitary. The theatre lasted till 1924, where it was turned back into retail space. Next door, there were soda shops and a dentist on the top floor. I'm guessing he had a lot of business. Next to that is the Garden Theatre, it was acquired in 1913, later on renovated in 1918, and in 1922, Crandall took over that theatre too and renamed it the Central Theatre. Over the years, floors were removed, and the buildings were stripped of their beauty, by the end of their life they became XXX movies houses before closing down in the 1980s, and then both torn down. In fact the only building that exists today is that white one in the back, the Landsburgh dept store.
