Mission San Juan Capistrano Poster
Mission San Juan Capistrano, located in present-day San Juan Capistrano, California, is one of the most historically significant and picturesque of the 21 California missions founded by Spanish Franciscan missionaries during the 18th century.
Founded on November 1, 1776, by Father Junípero Serra, the mission was named after Saint John of Capistrano, an Italian Franciscan priest. It was established as the seventh of the California missions and played a vital role in the Spanish colonisation of California. The mission complex included a church, living quarters, workshops, and extensive gardens. Over the years, it became known for its thriving agricultural activities, including the cultivation of grains, grapes, and other crops, which supported the local community.
One of the most famous aspects of Mission San Juan Capistrano is the annual return of the swallows to the mission. This natural phenomenon has been celebrated for nearly a century and draws visitors from around the world each spring. According to legend, the swallows migrate from Argentina and return to the mission every March 19th, St. Joseph's Day, to nest. This event has been commemorated with the Swallows' Day Parade and various festivities.
The history of Mission San Juan Capistrano also includes periods of decline and restoration. In the early 19th century, the mission faced challenges from Mexican secularisation policies, and much of its property was sold or confiscated. The mission fell into disrepair until the late 19th and early 20th centuries when preservation efforts began. Today, it stands as a beautifully restored historical site and museum, preserving its rich history and architectural heritage. Mission San Juan Capistrano continues to be an important cultural and historical landmark in California, showcasing the enduring legacy of Spanish colonial influence in the region.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
