The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a vibrant and deeply meaningful tradition in Mexico, celebrated annually on November 1st and 2nd. Rooted in Indigenous Aztec beliefs and blended with Catholic influences, this holiday honours deceased loved ones by welcoming their spirits back for a brief reunion. Families create colourful altars, known as ofrendas, adorned with marigolds (cempasúchil), candles, photographs, and personal mementos of the departed. Offerings of favourite foods, like pan de muerto (a sweet bread), sugar skulls, and beverages, are made to nourish the spirits on their journey. Communities also gather in cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, sharing stories, music, and prayers in a festive yet reflective atmosphere. The Day of the Dead is a celebration of life, death, and the enduring bonds between the living and those who have passed.
