This coat of arms is a representation of a legend concerning the founding of Tenochtítlan, which later became Mexico City. The war god Huitzilopochtli told the Aztec people to find an eagle perched atop a prickly pear cactus growing on a rock submerged in a lake. The eagle would have a serpent trapped in its mouth. This sign would mark the spot where the nomadic Aztec's were to build their first capital.
