His full name was Mehmed bin Murad (1432-1481) but he is remembered as Fatih - 'The Conqueror' - one of the most formidable rulers of the 15th century and architect of the Ottoman Empire's transformation into a world power. Ascending the throne at a young age, he possessed a sharp intellect, relentless ambition and a vision that reached far beyond Anatolia. In 1453, he completed his defining achievement, the capture of Constantinople, ending the Byzantine Empire, fulfilling the hadith of Nabi (saw) and establishing Istanbul as the new ottoman capital. He expanded Ottoman rule to the Balkans, across Anatolia and the Black Sea. Not only a conqueror, he was a statesman and cultural patron. He reorganised the Empire's administrative structure, strengthened legal institutions and encouraged scholarship, art and architecture. Fluent in in multiple languages, he engaged with both Islamic and 'classical' traditions, embodying a ruler who saw himself as the heir to both Rome and the muslim world. He had a reputation for severity in war but was also pragmatic - integrating diverse peoples and religions into his empire through systems of governance that balanced control with tolerance. He remains to this day one of the most consequential figures in history: conqueror, reformer and empire builder whose legacy reshaped both Europe and the so called Middle East.
