    If you look above the skulls head you will see the inscription in Mediaeval Latin "Memento Mori" which translates "remember that you have to die". I found this creepy tombstone skull inside The Covenanter's Prison at Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh Scotland. It was a very common thing to have skulls and Lation sayings on most of the tombs here. They date back to the middle ages. Its amazing that we can still see it in this day and age.
