The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a sovereign state based in west Africa. The country name comes from the Berbers kingdom of Mauritania which is nowadays called Morocco and Algeria. Arabs were the first to conquer the area under the Umayyad Caliphate. The first occupants of the country were the Berbers bringing Islam and Arabic culture. Mauritania was colonized by France until their independence in November 1960. The capital is Nouakchott and the country shares borders with the Atlantic ocean, Sahara, Mali, Algeria and Senegal.
