Mastodons or mastodonts were large tusked mammal species that first appeared almost 40 million years ago. The American mastodon lived from about 3.7 million years ago until it became extinct about 10,000 years BCE. It resembled a woolly mammoth in appearance, with a thick coat of shaggy hair, and had tusks that sometimes exceeded five metres in length and curved upwards.
