Er behütete früher große Anwesen und dank seiner enormen Größe und Stärke schlug er Wegelagerer in die Flucht ausschließlich durch seine Erscheinung. Er ist sehr kinderlieb und in einigen Ländern wird er durch seine Sanftmut auch als Therapiehund eingesetzt.
