Every summer since 1946 scientists with the Juneau Icefield Research Program have travelled across the icefield digging pits to measure the depth of the snow that fell the previous winter. The students set up camps on the glaciers to dig the pits while the traverse from Juneau, Alaska to Atlin, British Columbia by foot and by ski. The Juneau Icefield Research Program has been studying the glaciers of Southeast Alaska while training the earth scientists of tomorrow since 1946.
