Maroni River French Guiana Postcard

The Maroni River is the longest waterway in French Guiana, forming the natural border with Suriname. It is the lifeblood of the western region, serving as the primary transportation route for the Bushinengue and Amerindian communities living along its banks in traditional wooden villages. The river is famous for its wide, powerful flow and its numerous 'sauts'—rapids that require expert navigation in long, motorised pirogues. The banks are lined with ancient rainforest, and the water reflects the ever-changing colours of the tropical sky, ranging from deep silvers to fiery oranges at sunset.
