Maltese Cross - tie

The symbol used for many firefighter emblems is commonly referred to as a Maltese Cross, although it is more properly named a St Florian Cross. St Florian is a patron saint of firefighters. The Maltese cross is similar in design, but has inwardly pointed edges on the 4 protrusion. One side has the emblem alone and the other is backed by flames. International Firefighter's Day (IFFD) is celebrated on May 4th, which is also the Feast day of St Florian.
