Buried in the city's cathedral is Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor and founder of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. From 1949 to 1990, Magdeburg was part of the German Democratic Republic. Magdeburg celebrated its 1,200th anniversary in 2005.
