Madame C.J. Walker T-Shirt

Madame C.J. Walker (1867-1919), born Sarah Breedlove, was a pioneering American entrepreneur, philanthropist, political activist and one of the first self-made female millionaires in the United States (often cited as the first Black women to achieve this). In the early 1900s after suffering scalp issues and hair loss, she developed 'Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower' and a line of hair care and beauty products tailored for Black women. She rebranded as 'Madam C.J. Walker' after marrying Charles Joseph Walker (her 2nd husband, an ad man who helped market her products). With just $1.25, she built a business empire through door-to-door sales, demonstrations and training thousands of Black women as sales agents in the 'Walker System' She established a manufacturing company in Indianapolis (1910). At its peak, it employed thousands, generating $500,000 in annual sales. She was a major donor to the NAACP's anti-lynching campaign, YMCA, Tuskeegee Institute and other causes supporting Black education and civil rights. Sadly, she died of hypertension at just 51. Her story symbolises resilience, determination and Black excellence.
