Machinist - Cash only 1902 Ceramic Tile

Colourized photo from 1902 Original title: Assembling Dept, National Cash Register Location: Dayton, OH National Cash Register was responsible for making those pretty brass cash registers most stores used, and some still do. They employed a lot of people, both men and women. They gave free food in the cafeteria, listened to suggestions, and as you can see here, even had stools with wooden backs. And as you can tell, carpenters they were not. Everything was built by hand, no real production tools, just mills and other tools, no robots. The rooms were well lit, they called it a wall of light. Each floor was responsible for making some part of the machine, and this one is a final assembly room. On the far left you can see people outfitting the drawers and getting them ready. The drawers were made of wood, some of the fronts were made of metal. At the table closest to us, they are building and keying the lock assemblies. The table after that, they are building buttons. And from there, they have entire units, ready for the next part, and it practically goes back to infinity towards the back. They seem to be made to order, as you can see many different models here. I would imagine the person who is responsible for moving these from table to table is incredibly strong. These things way anywhere from 50-80 pounds!

Very happy when my tiles arrived. So good to be able to choose any photo for personal use. The colours are very clear and are far better than I expected.
