LONGWOOD - Salem, Virginia

Architectural elevation of LONGWOOD, Salem, Virginia, designed in 1904 by Walter J. Smith of Bramwell, West Virginia as a residence for Thomas H. Cooper, Esq. of Salem. Completed in 1905 at a cost of $78,000.00, the mansion was constructed of granite brick and featured a distinctive orange tile roof. Set on eighteen acres with a greenhouse, stables, swimming pool, gazebo and children's playhouse, the property was purchased in 1948 by the town of Salem for use as a park and civic meeting place. During renovations in 1968 the structure caught fire and was severely damaged: it was demolished shortly thereafter.
