A trip to the Morton Arboretum on New Year’s Day 2010 included a walk by this stream. Snow covered the ground, and late afternoon sunlight shone weakly. Yet that day also revealed hopeful signs of the Sun’s growing strength after the recent Solstice: the water was rippling rather than frozen, and the amount of light each day already was increasing. Although winter had only begun, the promise of spring already was in the air.
