The design “Life Is a Horse Race” is based on a scrappy alley cat character. The cat is down on its luck, with a golden horseshoe in the background. The alley cat is wearing jockey boots and seems downtrodden. The cat’s design includes boots and a riding helmet. The cat’s whiskers are uneven and broken, symbolising a scruffy, unshaven beard. The scruffy cat’s rebellious attitude is further demonstrated by its jewellery. However, the cat clings to the idea of good luck by wearing a nose ring and an earring in the shape of his lucky horseshoe. But there is more than merely wishing for luck, with respect to this character. Symbolising the cat’s misfortune is a bandaged tail, perhaps hinting more at a bruised ego than a physical issue. The cat’s expression says it all. He has obviously run the race and lost many times. Judging by the bloodshot eye and the patch over the other eye, coupled with the dejected posture, the cat is at the end of his career. Humour is at the centre of this design. It reflects the fact that life is a horserace with many risks and challenges along the way. We win, lose, or just place in a field of participants. The idea is to keep going and never quit.
