Lansdowne Portrait: US President George Washington Stone Coaster
George Washington, born in 1732 in Virginia, was a prominent figure in the American Revolution and the first President of the United States. His journey to becoming a national icon was marked by a series of significant events and leadership roles. - In 1753, at the age of 21, Washington was appointed as a major in the Virginia militia. This marked the beginning of his military career, which would later play a crucial role in the American Revolution. During the French and Indian War, he gained valuable experience as a commander and strategist. - In 1775, the American Revolutionary War erupted, and Washington was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. His leadership and military prowess were instrumental in securing American independence from Great Britain. After eight years of arduous conflict, the war culminated in the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781. - Following the war, Washington returned to his home at Mount Vernon. However, his contributions to the nation did not end there. In 1787, he was elected as President of the Constitutional Convention, where he played a pivotal role in drafting the United States Constitution. - In 1789, Washington was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States. During his two terms, he established the foundations of the American government, including the cabinet system and the judiciary. He also maintained neutrality in foreign affairs and promoted economic development. - It was during his presidency that Gilbert Stuart, a renowned American portrait painter, had the opportunity to paint George Washington. Stuart, known for his bold brushwork and ability to capture a subject's likeness, was commissioned to create portraits of the first president. - The sittings between Stuart and Washington took place in Philadelphia, where the nation's capital was temporarily located. Stuart was captivated by Washington's presence and sought to capture his dignity and authority in his paintings. The result was a series of iconic portraits that have become synonymous with the image of George Washington. - One of the most famous portraits, known as the "Lansdowne Portrait," depicts Washington in a grand and dignified manner. The painting, commissioned by the 1st Marquess of Lansdowne, showcases Washington's stature as a leader and statesman. - Stuart's portraits of Washington not only immortalised the first president's image but also solidified his legacy as a founding father of the United States. These paintings continue to inspire and captivate viewers, serving as a reminder of the nation's rich history and the enduring legacy of George Washington. - The Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart in 1796.

The coasters are gorgeous, a quality feel and heavy weight. They look like a precious archeological find. A rustic stone juxtaposed with a modern floral black and white print. I like the way the print goes slightly imperfect on the cut stone edges giving them a kind-of natural beauty.
They are a great product and I use them to protect the arms of my couch from hot cups of coffee. Printing is good happy with the quality.
