Kobuk Valley National Park, located in northwestern Alaska, was established in 1980 and is known for its remote wilderness and unique sand dunes within the Arctic Circle. The park’s most noteable feature is the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, which can reach up to 100 feet in height and create a surreal desert-like landscape amidst boreal forests and tundra. Other key sights include the Kobuk River, which provides a migration route for thousands of caribou, and Onion Portage, an important archaeological site where Indigenous peoples have hunted caribou for over 10,000 years.
