Jambalaya, Zydeco, Creole, Cajun, Jazz, Mardi Gras . . . all of those immediately bring to mind the beautifully diverse state of Louisiana. Louisiana is the only U.S. state with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are equivalent to counties. The state's capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans. It was on October 20, 1803 that the United States Senate ratified the Louisiana treaty, securing approximately 828,000 square miles of territory for around $15 Million. That purchase doubled the size of the United States and would ultimately result in the addition of 13 states to the union. Known as "Child of the Mississippi", "The Bayou State", "Sportsman's Paradise", "The Creole State" and "The Sugar State", Louisiana's Official Nickname is "The Pelican State" and their Official State Flower is the beautiful, majestic, fragrant, consummately Southern "Magnolia".
