Kalambo Falls Zambia Postcard

Kalambo Falls is a spectacular single-drop waterfall located on the Kalambo River, marking the border between Zambia and Tanzania at the southeastern edge of Lake Tanganyika. Plunging an uninterrupted 221 metres (725 feet) down a sheer cliff into a deep gorge, it stands as one of the tallest uninterrupted waterfalls in Africa, nearly twice the height of Victoria Falls. The surrounding environment is chraacterised by lush, pristine riverine forests and dramatic rocky escarpments, providing a sanctuary for rare wildlife and nesting giant marabou storks. Beyond its breathtaking natural beauty, Kalambo Falls is an internationally renowned archaeological treasure. The area surrounding the falls contains one of the most important Stone Age sites in Africa, with continuous human habitation extending back over 250,000 years. Excavations here have unearthed exceptionally well-preserved organic materials, including some of the oldest wooden tools ever discovered, making it a crucial location for understanding early human technological development and adaptation.
