Joker Raggedy-Ann Clown With Swirly Eyes

This is a photograph I took of my ten-year old daughter with some serious embellishments. This insane-clown portrait really appeals to me because it is so contrary to her sweet nature and fits right in with our tattooed, pierced family as well as all the Day of the Dead Skulls. Tactile, layered, vibrant, tribal, riotously coloured. I’ve known since I was old enough to hold a crayon that I would continue to colour & decorate this world for as long as I live. Art is so very personal for me. In my youth all I wanted to do was invent a new colour. I enjoy painting on canvas, paper and life-sized ceramic skulls. I have very little patience so while waiting for wet paint, oil pastel or solvent layers to dry I often switch gears and move on to my other mediums like making jewellery or using jewellery and found objects to encrust Day of the Dead Skulls. With every medium- I use coloured pencils, charcoal, markers, erasers and finally solvents to bring each original drawing to fruition. I delight in adding layer after layer building and removing textures until I am completely satisfied. I am blessed with a very short attention span so I work on everything at once in short bursts. This keeps the work fresh and when complete there is a clear demonstration of evolution and dedication. I don’t toil or suffer to make these things for you. Nor am I afraid of going too far and “over-doing or ruining” a piece because I have it’s evolution documented. This frees me to experiment where others might use caution. Each day I wake up knowing that I have the luxury of playing all day so I do feel extremely lucky.
