English painter JMW Turner was renowned for his vivid landscape paintings during his life, but also created some stunning mythological works. The Golden Bough depicts a scene from Virgil’s Aeneid in which Aeneas consults a Sibyl in order to enter the Underworld. The painting shows the Sibyl holding a sickle and the golden bough needed to enter the land of the dead.
