A few months ago I saw a photo of a stone sculpture that I immediately took to heart. It was showing a smiling childlike creature surrounded by greenery and holding a flower close to the chest. Having recently lost a child, I found comfort in the picture and saved it to my bookmarks. Somewhat later I found out that it was Jizō that I had met, the Buddhist bodhisattva, one of the most loved divinities in Japan, especially by grieving mothers. Generally, Jizō is the protector of women, children and travellers.
