Jazz is an urban music form which began in African-American areas of New Orleans in the late 1900s, and developed rapidly after the turn of the century. Jazz has its roots in blues and ragtime music, and also European military band music. There are many different types of jazz including swing, Kansas City Jazz, Gypsy jazz, big band and cool jazz (1940s), bebop, free jazz (1950s), jazz-rock fusion. Because it involves so many sub-styles, jazz music is hard to define overall. Women composers, singers and musicians found expression in this musical style from its beginnings. When male jazz musicians were drafted during the second world war, female bands stepped in. Jazz is equal opportunity music.
