Italia and Germania (Italy and Germany as Sisters) Ceramic Tile
This design features a painting by the German artist Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1789–1869). It is an allegorical painting symbolising the friendship between two countries or cultures, Italia and Germania, represented by two women. At that time, both Italy and Germany were cultural regions but not unified national states. The background shows a typically Italian landscape with rocky coast. On the right side the background contains a German city in gothic style. The original artwork was painted in 1828.
