In comparison to his subsequent works, the tension in this composition is not as strong. He called it "the lightning conductor for my insanity" because he thought he could keep painting and save himself from going nuts. Strong shapes, unusual angles, close-up views, and flat local colour create parallels that are inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints (not modelled according to the fall of light).
