Irises (1889) Botanical Art Van Gogh Retro Floral Square Sticker

These wonderful stationery paper stickers, "Irises" from 1889, feature the exquisite blue iris blooms from the Impressionist master Vincent Van Gogh's Impressionism painting of the botanical blue iris garden. In the year before his death in 1890, while a patient at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole facility in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, Vincent van Gogh produced a number of works with iris themes, most notably Irises. Less than a month after turning himself in to the asylum, in May 1889, Van Gogh began to paint iris in the hospital garden. He was influenced by the natural environment. The tension in this composition is not as great as it is in his later compositions. Since he believed he could keep painting and prevent himself from going insane, he referred to it as "the lightning conductor for my lunacy." Parallels influenced by Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints are created by strong shapes, odd angles, close-up views, and flat local colour (not modelled according to the fall of light). There is a sense of tenderness and lightness across the entire image. When there is no gloom, the iris are vibrant and alive.
