Gandhi was prime minister of India from 1966 to 1977, and from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. She was the only woman prime minister of that country and was in office longer than any other PM. In a 1999 BBC poll she was named "Woman of the Millenium" and in a 2001 poll by "India Today", she was voted the greatest Indian Prime Minister. Politcally ruthless and having many revolutionary ideas, she made countless friends but also enemies. On October 30 1984 she said in a speech, "I am alive today, I may not be there tomorrow...I shall continue to serve until my last breath and when I die, I can say, that every drop of my blood will invigorate India and strengthen it." The next day she was shot by two of her bodyguards. Her legacy remains and she continues to be an inspiration to women and men throughout the world.
