Iceland Reykyavik Church of Hallgrimur Travel Magnet

The Church of Hallgrímur (Hallgrímskirkja) is one of Iceland’s most iconic landmarks, towering over the capital city of Reykjavík with its striking architectural design. Standing at 74.5 metres (244 feet), it is the tallest church in Iceland and one of the most recognisable buildings in the country. Designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson, the church was inspired by Iceland’s basalt lava columns, which naturally form in hexagonal patterns due to volcanic activity. Construction began in 1945 and took over 40 years to complete, finally finishing in 1986. Named after Hallgrímur Pétursson, a 17th-century Icelandic poet and clergyman known for his religious hymns, the church serves as both a place of worship and a major tourist attraction. One of the best features of Hallgrímskirkja is its observation tower, which offers panoramic views of Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains and ocean. Visitors can take an elevator to the top to enjoy one of the best vistas in the city. The church’s interior is minimalist, reflecting traditional Icelandic design, with a grand pipe organ built by German organ builder Johannes Klais. Outside the church stands a statue of Leif Erikson, the Viking explorer believed to have reached North America before Columbus. This statue was a gift from the United States in 1930 to commemorate Iceland’s 1,000th anniversary of its parliament, the Alþingi.
