The International Space Station (ISS) is a habitable artificial satellite in low Earth orbit. It follows the Salyut, Almaz, Skylab and Mir stations as the ninth space station to be inhabited. The ISS is a modular structure whose first component was launched in 1998. Now the largest artificial body in orbit, it can often be seen at the appropriate time with the unaided eye from Earth. The ISS consists of pressurised modules, external trusses, solar arrays and other components. It’s easy to spot the ISS when it flies overhead! Two of the groups of seven represent the crews of Challenger and Columbia. The group of three represents the crew of Apollo 1. The coloured star represents both a crew member (commander) AND the vehicle itself. The Apollo 1 star is in the same shade of blue as the NASA meatball logo. We are widely known for our logos!
