The lion was one of the first heraldic symbols, dating back to the high mediaeval era, around the 12th century, at least. It is part of the coat of arms of many countries, cities and regions (past and present) including but not limited to England,Scotland, Austria, Bohemia, Norway, Jerusalem, Leon (in old Spain, before it was Spain!), Finland and more. It is more common than other heraldic symbols because its meaning is larger, extending beyond heraldry to include heritage and chivalry.

The coasters are gorgeous, a quality feel and heavy weight. They look like a precious archeological find. A rustic stone juxtaposed with a modern floral black and white print. I like the way the print goes slightly imperfect on the cut stone edges giving them a kind-of natural beauty.
They are a great product and I use them to protect the arms of my couch from hot cups of coffee. Printing is good happy with the quality.
