This head of angel is a detail from the painting Virgin of the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci, iconic master of the High Italian Renaissance, depicting the infant John the Baptist with the Madonna, an angel, and Christ child. One of two versions of this composition, the painting is an exemplary example of da Vinci's incomparable draughtsmanship and mastery of the human form, his command of chiaroscuro modelling and unique sfumato ("smoky") technique.
