A hāpuʻu fern frond is captured in the process of unfurling its leaves, showcasing the intricate natural spiral at its core. It is surrounded by the delicate, green foliage of mature ferns, with dappled light filtering through from the background. Cibotium menziesii, the hāpuʻu or Hawaiian tree fern, is a species of tree fern that is endemic to the islands of Hawaiʻi. Its binomial nomenclature designation is named after the Scottish naturalist Archibald Menzies. The ferns are endemic to Hawai’i and can most easily be seen at the windward (east) side of al Hawaiian islands at elevations between 1,000 to 6,000 feet (300 to 1800 metres). The core of the fern is starchy and can be cooked, but the Hawaiians only ate Hāpuʻu in times of famine. The fronds have several uses, too.
