Penny Dreadful came about a few years ago when I was thinking up silly names for characters in my writing (a Penny Dreadful was a derogatory name for the lurid serial stories that were printed in England in the Victorian and Edwardian eras). Instantly, I saw an image of a dark, goth-like girl in a sailor suit of the early 20th Century who relishes the grim and gruesome. I thought she’d be perfect for Halloween.
