Haleakalā, located on the island of Maui, is a massive shield volcano that dominates the island’s southeastern region. Rising to an elevation of 10,023 feet (3,055 metres) above sea level, it is the highest point on Maui and one of the most iconic landmarks in Hawaii. The name Haleakalā means “House of the Sun” in Hawaiian, and according to legend, the demigod Māui lassoed the sun from its summit to slow its descent, making the days longer. The volcano’s summit features an otherworldly landscape of red and black cinder cones, lava rock formations, and deep craters, resembling a lunar or Martian terrain. Haleakalā National Park, which encompasses much of the volcano, is a haven for nature lovers, hikers, and stargazers.
