Gustav Klimt - Tannenwald Pine Forest Notebook

Fir Forest I / Pine Forest I (Tannenwald I), painted in 1901 in oil on canvas by Austrian Symbolist Gustav Klimt. Straight dark trunks rise through a close-cropped woodland, while the forest floor and foliage are rendered with broken touches that reduce conventional depth. The image was among Klimt's first sustained experiments with the forest interior during his summer stays near Litzlberg on the Attersee. Photography and contemporary Post-Impressionist painting helped encourage the radical cropping and emphasis on surface. Rather than offering a picturesque vista, Klimt makes the repeated trunks themselves the subject, creating a solemn rhythm across the square canvas.
