Guadeloupe is located in the Caribbean Ocean, southeast of Puerto Rico, that was first inhabited by Arawak and Carib Indians. British and Spanish colonizers brought enslaved Africans to produce staple items such as sugar, coffee and bananas. During the early 1900s, the descendants of Africans came to the Ellis Island Immigration Station in New York Harbour like many other immigrants to America. Augustus F. Sherman (1865-1925) was responsible for processing the incoming immigrants for the Bureau of Immigration at Ellis Island. As a photographer, he was also able to convince new Americans, like this unnamed Guadeloupean woman, to pose for a brief portrait in 1911.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs.
it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!
