"Gryps" is the ancient Greek word for "griffin". This griffin is based on the description given by the Roman author Aelian in his "On Animals", where he quotes the Greek writer Ctesias in saying that griffins were like feathered lions with the heads and wings of eagles, that the feathers on their back were black and the ones on their front were red, that their necks were streaked with dark blue, their wings white, and their eyes like fire.
