Grand Army of the Republic Last Encampment T-Shirt

The GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was a group created by Civil War Veterans. In 1890, it had a massive membership in the hundreds of thousands. They helped elect Presidents, built libraries and landmark buildings and donated monies for charities across the country. Every so many years, they would have a national reunion or "encampment." In 1949, they had their last reunion in Indianapolis. Six survivors of the Great Conflagration appeared. All in their 90s. They decided that once the last Civil War survivor died, the GAR would cease to exist. In 1956, drummer boy Albert Woolson died in Duluth, Minnesota at 109 years old, and the GAR was dissolved.
