One of Francisco Goya’s most famous paintings, The Third of May (Execution of the Defenders of Madrid) depicts the brutal slaying of Spanish defenders by the invading troops of Napoleon. The work feautures a man raising his arms illumined by his white shirt. The faceless soldiers of Napoleon point their guns with bayonets as the bodies of the slain lay at the ground covered in blood. Considered a revolutionary work within the evolution of Western painting, The Third of May continues to retain its original force and power.
