Glastonbury Abbey Poster

Glastonbury Abbey Poster

The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. Glastonbury Abbey, located in Somerset, England, is a site with a history that spans over a thousand years and is shrouded in legend and mythology. According to tradition, the abbey was founded in the 7th century by Saint Joseph of Arimathea, a biblical figure who is said to have brought the Holy Grail to Glastonbury. While the historical accuracy of these claims is debated, Glastonbury Abbey did indeed play a significant role in mediaeval England. In the 10th century, King Edmund granted the abbey royal privileges, elevating its status and leading to a period of prosperity. The abbey became a major centre of religious and cultural activity, attracting pilgrims from across England and beyond. Glastonbury Abbey faced a tumultuous history, marked by periods of decline and revival. In 1184, a devastating fire destroyed much of the abbey's structure, prompting an ambitious rebuilding effort. The abbey reached its zenith in the 14th century but suffered a severe blow during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century under King Henry VIII. The abbey was dissolved in 1539, its wealth confiscated, and its buildings left to decay. The ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, with their Gothic arches and picturesque setting, became a source of inspiration for artists and writers in the centuries that followed. Today, Glastonbury Abbey is a popular historical and archaeological site. The extensive ruins attract visitors who come to explore the abbey's mediaeval past, its connections to Arthurian legend, and the serene ambiance of its grounds. The abbey remains an integral part of Glastonbury's identity, contributing to the town's reputation as a centre for spirituality, folklore, and ancient history.

I hung this in the stairwell of our house, near some other Renoir pictures. My daughter says it looks like she is looking at her when she walks up the stairs. it's called "The Excursionist", she is holding a walking stick. Renoir was an impressionist, I don't think this is an actual person. The finished framed picture arrived and looks better than the online pic - Beautiful!

Absolutely superb Art Deco poster. The colours are vibrant, sympathetic to the era and perfect for use. I framed it and hung above the entrance to my Art Deco inspired lounge room. Stunning! The print is precise, clear and of an excellent standard. It was cleverly packaged so there wasn’t a blemish or crease. Perfect!
