Ghardaia Algeria Postcard

Ghardaia is the stunning capital city of the M'zab Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the heart of the Algerian Sahara. This unique region is home to five fortified towns (ksour) – including Ghardaia itself – that were founded by the Mozabite people in the 11th century. Each town is a architectural masterpiece of adaptive and communal living, with its distinctive pastel-coloured mud-brick houses and imposing mosques spiralling up from the rocky plateau like vibrant, natural formations. The city of Ghardaia is built around a central mosque with a towering minaret, with narrow, winding alleys descending down the hillside. The houses, often painted in soft, flat shades of blue, white, and ochre, are closely packed together and cleverly designed with small windows and rooftop terraces to manage the desert heat and create a sense of community. Its market (souk) is a bustling hub of activity, filled with colourful textiles, pottery, and spices, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the date palm groves in the dry riverbed below.
