This design features a painting by the American artist George Caleb Bingham (1811–1879). It shows George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River, which occurred on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. It was a major event that ultimately led to the achievement of American independence from the British Crown, establishing the United States of America as the first modern constitutional liberal democracy.
