George Washington As A Freemason Portrait, 1867 by Strobridge & Co. George Washington, the first President of the United States (1789–1797) was initiated into Freemasonry in 1752. He had high regards for the Masonic Order for it's dedication to the Enlightenment principles of rationality, reason and fraternalism. Washington was named Master in the Virginia charter of Alexandria Lodge No. 22. in 1788. Washington wears a Masonic apron, the apron symbolises innocence and sacrifice.
