George and the Dragon (by Raphael) Playing Cards
This design features a painting by Italian Renaissance artist Raphael (born Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, 1483–1520). It shows St. George, who was a Roman soldier of Christian faith, saving the daughter of a pagan king by attacking and subduing a dragon with his lance. In the original story, the princess then led the dragon to her city, where the saint swiftly killed it with his sword, which prompted the king and his subjects to convert to Christianity. The original painting was completed in 1503.
