The Galapagos penguin found on the Galápagos Islands and off the coast of Ecuador on the equator are an endangered species due to several factors. Their comparitively small area of habitat compared to many other animals and birds, limited food supply and climate change are also partly responsible, as are the introduction of predators. Sadly, cats and rats introduced by humans are a big threat because they will eat penguin eggs and even eat the chicks and even adult penguins. Rising sea temperatures negatively impact the food supply and overall health, then there is mosquitos which can carry avian flu which is particularly deadly for the Galapagos penguin. Other dangers are getting caught in fishing nets, limited nest building sites and pollution. With such a large number of factors against the penguins it is entirely possible for this species to become extinct. There are only around 1,800 penguins left so they are definitely considered endangered. Galapagos penguins feed on small school fish like sardines and anchovies, they hunt in numbers to drive the fish to the surface making it easier to pick them off. Their lifespan is around 20 years in the wild, though many do not reach that due to the many reasons above that I mentioned earlier. The average egg count is two but the parents often only raise one chick and it has been said that there are around 800 breeding pairs.
