Cats are the Soul of Indifference. What's Your Excuse? I kid, on both accounts, of course. Not having been a cat owner in any point of my life, I can still refute that stereotype. Sure, cats don't need humans in the same way that dogs do, and the former don't express affection as openly or effusively as the latter do. One feline visitor left a half-eaten mouse on our lawn once (that's how cats show they like you. Sharing is caring). Cats are masters of manipulation at getting what they want (not need!) from us. Another visited the backyard daily, sometimes several times a day, for 8 months. I could not open the door to the sunroom without seeing her Orangeness at the top of the stairs, waiting for milk, cat treats, and a session of cuddling (and not necessarily in that order). If none of those were forthcoming, plaintive meowing, pitched like a human baby's cries, would ensue. My reward would be purring; cat kisses in the form of long blinks; lap naps that could last up to 30 minutes; and really close eye-to-eye contact, as if I was the centre and only wonder of her world.
